PREP ROUNDUP: MCC girls can’t come all the way back, fall to Walkerville

MANISTEE — Manistee Catholic Central girls basketball came close to winning its second conference game of the season on Tuesday, but the Sabers fell just short against Walkerville.

MCC (2-14, 1-11) trailed for most of the game in a 39-33 loss to the Wildcats.

The Sabers battled foul trouble in the first half and had to play some different lineups. The team finished the game with 21 fouls.

“We had opportunities. We were down for a while. We made a nice run in the third. In the fourth Sarah hit a three and we cut it to two. It was still attainable,” MCC coach Todd Erickson said.

Rylee Feliczak led the team with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Liz Nelson had 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Sarah Bialik had 7 points.

Onekama girls down Leland

ONEKAMA — Onekama girls basketball continued to pick up steam with the postseason approaching on Tuesday with a win over Leland.

The Portagers (9-9, 7-8) held the Comets scoreless in the first quarter to set up a 48-33 win.

“Our defense was really good. The kids played well. We only gave up two buckets in the whole first half,” Onekama coach Jim Armstrong said.

Zoe Morley led the team with 12 points, Colleen McCarthy had 11 points and 6 rebounds, Elizabeth Domres had 10 points, Carlee Pepera had 7 points, and Maggie Domres had 7 points.

Manistee boys fall at Cadillac

CADILLAC — Manistee boys basketball ran out of gas against Cadillac on Tuesday night in a 60-43 loss.

The Chippewas (5-11) couldn’t replicate the performance from Friday night against Ludington with a strong finish. Manistee was within a couple of baskets late in the third quarter but ran out of steam down the stretch.

“They are a very physical team. I think the physicality wore us down. It was about a four-point game with a minute and a half to go in the third quarter. We just ran out of gas. We were just tired. We wore out,” Manistee coach Dan Gustad said.

Keaton Connell had 16 points, Jack Sandstedt had 10 points, and Jacob Gustad had 6 points and 4 rebounds.
