JOHN GANCARZ: Assault weapons don’t belong in hands of general public

TO THE EDITOR:

Well here we are and it’s a sad, sad day in America.

School children ages 14 to 17 are protesting in Washington and all over this country because our government has done nothing, yes nothing, at all to protect them from anyone being able to get their hands on an assault weapon and walk into a school and kill their classmates.

And a much bigger question is where have all the parents been? For the last three or four years, did they get on the phone and at least call their representatives in Washington D.C. and demand action and pass laws to get all assault weapons out of the general public’s hands, to stop the sale of these guns in gun shops and gun shows? When are the adults of this country going to wake up?

The kids have, tell me what are the older people waiting for? Don’t you know how to write a letter? Don’t you know how to dial a phone and ask for some common sense laws to get these guns out of our society and back to the military where they belong?

These guns are not hunting guns. These guns are made for one thing only — to kill and wound as  many people as possible in a very short time, 50 shots in less than five minutes.

Let’s work together and save the lives of innocent little young kids. Get these guns out of our country.
