Forbes wins district

Manistee has never had a district wrestling champion until now. Aaron Forbes defeated Chad Coon of Reed City by inquiry default in the 130 pound weight class Saturday at Grayling High School to become the first Chippewa to win a district championship. Forbes, along with Kris Maddox, Jeremy Maki, and Chris Longyear, all qualified for the individual regional championships, to be held Saturday in Alma.

Coal strike could force steps here

The energy crunch brought about by the nation’s longest ever coal strike has local Consumers Power Company officials geared to begin a series of steps of energy-saving measures should they become necessary. J.E. Blissick, local manager, said the company has a set of emergency plans and procedures approved in advance by the Public Service Commission.

Schwing receives plaque

Doctor Donald Schwing receive a plaque Monday honoring him for his work as Chief of Staff at West Shore Hospital. Dr. Schwing was Chief of Staff last year.

80 YEARS AGO

Fly tiers to meet

The first meeting of Manistee fly tiers last Friday was cut short because a number had made previous appointments. Some enrolled in the class and left immediately, while others lingered to swap yarns of first and flies. The group will meet again Friday evening.

Rotary Club pays tribute to Nielsen

The Manistee Rotary Club at its regular meeting last night at the Hotel Chippewa dispensed with all business of the club and the members joined in an observance of the death of Rolf B. Nielsen, charter member and past president of the local organization. An impressive resume of Mr. Nielsen’s outstanding record of achievement and community service during his life in Manistee was presented by Howard Campbell, at the conclusion of which the members stood for one minute ini silent tribute to the memory of their departed fellow member.
