History of Interlochen next subject of Academy Lecture

BENZONIA — A lecture on the history of Interlochen is up next in the Benzonia Academy Lecture series.

The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. on March 8 at the Benzie Area Historical Museum. Dave Pennington will speak on the history of the Interlochen area in upper lower Michigan, the historic buildings and their development. Pennington will also talk about the origin of the Interlochen State Park, the largest state park in Michigan, located between Duck and Green Lakes.

Finally he will discuss the development of the four Pennington camps from 1917-1950. The Pennington campus included one section for boys, another for girls and a traveling camp that traveled as much as 9,000 miles in one summer, taking campers across the United States, down into Mexico and up into Canada. This continued for 32 years.

Pennington, an active historian, is a retired school administrator, a former board member of the Traverse City History Center and a volunteer at the Benzie Area Historical Museum.
