Vandalized ‘Old Grandpa’ repaired by local family

On Feb. 23 the old grandpa which had decorated the front of the North Channel Outlet store since last summer was vandalized, the head smashed to pieces. The destructive act didn’t go unnoticed by the community, and in particular, five-year-old Lee Jacobs couldn’t understand why anyone would smash old grandpa. His mother, Darlene, stopped at the North Channel Outlet to see if the pieces had been saved, and after offering her services to attempt to put the head back together, owner, Connie Slade, gave her a box containing 50 plus pieces of grandpa’s head. 12 hours and some glue later, Grandpa’s head was restored.


“Save Your Vision Week”

Dr. Charles J. Keil, O.D., spoke to the four-old classes of Trinity Lutheran Nursery School as part of “Save Your Vision Week” March 6-11. By taking a trip to an optometrist’s office, the children learned the importance of taking care of their vision.

Smart is new staff member

Wally Smart is the new Manistee Counseling Center staff member working with alcohol and substance abuse. He replaces Ken DeLaat. A graduate of Illinois State in Bloomington-Normal, Smart had been working for Five-CAP in Scottville in job finding and counseling. Smart was introduced at Thursday’s meeting of the Manistee-Benzie Mental Health Services board.


Noted artists coming here

Milton Cohen, one of the nation’s outstanding artists, will direct the first Manistee Workshop in Painting sponsored by the University of Michigan, Robert D. Brackett, Jr., supervisor of extension service. The first lesson in the series will be conducted by Mr. Cohen on March 18th, followed by Leonard Zamiska on March 25th, Geromre Kamrowski on April 8, with Frede Vidar concluding the on April 22.



Each member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce is urged to bring as many guests as he can to the dinner and smoker which will be held at the Chippewa Hotel on March 15 at 6:30 p.m. An interesting program has been arranged for the evening.

Kiddies Dog Show

Johnny and Mary and all the kids in Manistee seem to be concerned suddenly as to whether their pet dogs are properly washed, de-flead and clean clean as a whistle. The reason is the annual Kiddies Dog Show which will be held Saturday afternoon at the Lyric Theatre.
