Spirit of the Woods to host Roger Brown and Joe Wilson

MANISTEE — The Spirit of the Woods Music Association will host a concert by Roger Brown and Joe Wilson at 8 p.m. on April 7, at the Browntown Hall, located at 8233 Coates Highway in Manistee. There is a fee to enter.

Roger Brown is a Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist who studied English Literature and Philosophy at Washington and Lee University; who lives in Holland, Michigan; who is from Tryon, North Carolina, and is married to Jonetta Toril Moen Brown. Roger is an accomplished songwriter, soulfull singer and a stellar guitar player; who has played with Freddy Fender, Ringo Starr,Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connelly.

Roger has been singing, playing and writing music virtually his entire life. He was a founding member of the band Stealers Wheel. He wrote the music and lyrics to Ringo Starr’s children’s release “Scouse the Mouse” and worked with Ringo as Musical Director when the album was recorded.

Roger is a respected studio musician, vocalist and side man and has recorded and/or toured with Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, Freddy Fender, Ringo Starr, Link Wray and Joann Kelly among others. Fifteen of Roger’s original songs, which span the roots of American music from folk to country to blues, have been covered by other artists. He has toured extensively as a solo performer and band leader, and has appeared at numerous international music festivals.

Roger has recorded two solo CDs “Any Way You Please” and his most recent “Sometimes You’re Lucky.”

Since moving to Michigan, Roger has been a member of the Midnight Cattle Callers, The Wilenes and his duo Drive South with Mary Sue Wilkinson. Currently Roger can be seen performing solo, and with his band The Big Time Express.

Joe Wilson is a guitarist, steel guitarist and singer; who is best known for playing with longtime Michigan favorites, Steppin’ In It. Joe has played many of the nation’s top concerts and festivals, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Wheatland, Blissfest, Old Settlers Festival, the Woody Guthrie Festival, Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, and Live at Mountain Stage.

Joe has been performing with Steppin’ In It for over 10 years. Joe has been fortunate enough to appear on stage with Wayne Hancock, Bill Kirchen, Greg Brown, Tim O’brien and many others. Joe also performs with Shout Sister Shout and Traverse City’s Sister Wilene.
