DAVID NIEDZIELSKI: Shares thoughts on gun control issue

TO THE EDITOR:

Despite an abundance (39) of serious, credible warnings over a period of more than a year neither the FBI nor the Broward County Sheriff Department in Parkland, Fla., took steps to block Nikolas Cruz from buying a gun. Once he began shooting Feb. 14, BCSD officers allowed him all the time he wanted to murder 17 people.

On March 20, a student at Great Mills High School in Maryland shot two students but was stopped by a single shot from the school’s resource officer. This shooting ended less than a minute after it began.

How were these two tragedies handled by the mainstream media? That a good guy with a gun promptly stopped a bad guy with a gun, thus saving lives, was buried. The mainstream media was not going to admit the fact that guns save lives. This is lying by omission, journalistic malpractice.

Instead of a thorough examination and exposure of the law enforcement agencies that failed their community miserably, the mainstream media worked in concert with fellow leftist politicians and organizations to launch the most deviously orchestrated anti-gun fraud I have seen in my lifetime.

The Washington D.C. march was supposedly a student grassroots effort for school safety. In reality it was organized and financed by well-heeled leftist organizations and politicians to become an emotional propaganda spectacle con job to condemn guns, gun owners, the NRA and the 2nd Amendment. Kids became pawns in the left’s war on guns. Posters were vulgar, slogans were untrue, speeches were hateful with many calling for banning firearms and repealing the 2nd Amendment.

Let’s look at some facts. A gun is an inanimate object. It will direct a bullet to the point where the one who fires the gun aims it. If a person uses it for an evil purpose, it becomes an assault weapon. The exact same gun, in the hand of a person using it to repel an aggressor, is a defense weapon.

In his second term, President Obama commissioned the Center for Disease Control to assess existing research on gun violence. The report, compiled by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, found that gun ownership was the single biggest crime-stopping force in America. On average, every day in America a minimum of 800 muggings, robberies, physical assaults, home invasions, burglaries, kidnappings, rapes etc. won’t be completed — in most cases without a shot ever being fired. The fact that the intended victims produced a lawfully owned gun in defense caused the criminals to flee. Other studies have the number of thwarted crimes closer to 8,000 per day.

Gun bans and 2nd Amendment repeal would leave only criminals and the government with guns. Those 800 crimes per day would be perpetrated, in ever increasing numbers. All citizens could become subjects of an unrestrained tyrannical government. Without the 2nd Amendment to back it up, our Bill of Rights is just ink on paper.

This is the genius of gun control.
