MANISTEE — Manistee’s track program took time out from a rare opportunity to practice outdoors to do some heavy lifting Wednesday afternoon.

The team unloaded the school’s new pole-vault pit, marking a major step forward in a very long process.

Like much else this spring, the pit’s arrival was scheduled to happen earlier, but was delayed by the weather.

But Manistee track coach Eric Thuemmel said that he and the team were excited to see it.

“We grabbed a group of guys and got that thing unloaded,” Thuemmel said. “We put the thing together, and had kids vaulting about a half-hour after it got there.

“That was exciting. Wow, we’re actually vaulting.”

The pit’s arrival was a significant event in what has been a long and agonizing road to getting an adequate track facility at the school, which was previously the only Class B school in the state without its own track.

“This is like Christmas for me,” Thuemmel said. “Christmas comes once a year, but a new pole-vault pit comes once in a lifetime. Some of the kids came over and wondered if I was crying or not, because I got a little teary-eyed on one of the first days we practiced on the track.”

The track itself was constructed last spring and summer, and will have the bare minimum to be able to host track meets as soon as the hurdles arrive. They are expected this weekend.

“All we need now is good weather,” Thuemmel said.
