Write thank-you notes with the Near & Farr Friends

ONEKAMA — These days, handwritten gestures of any sort seem to be rare novelties.

Near & Farr Friends are encouraging all to take a leaf out of Jimmy Fallon’s show and write some thank-you notes.

So often people forget to tell others how much they matter, or that what they do does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Sending a handwritten thank-you note says that one went out of their way to sit down and write a special message to someone who deserves it. A personal note has the power to make someone’s day better while experiencing gratitude for someone’s help, gift or kind gesture.

It is a win-win for the writer and the person receiving the thank-you card, because studies have shown that being thankful improves physical and emotional health. Frequent expression of feelings of thankfulness boosts the immune system and increases blood supply to our heart. Gratitude may be as important to our health as nutrition.

There are two common reasons people don’t write thank-you notes. The biggest excuse is not having the materials at hand. The second excuse is not having time. The Near & Farr Friends will take care of both of these on Thursday at the Onekama Township Hall. From 2:30-4:30 p.m. anyone can drop in and write a thank you note or two. Stationary, pens, stamps and suggestions for what to say, in case one is “lost for words,” will be provided. If one is worried about their handwriting, help will be available to write as one dictates.

A list of suggestions of those who would be happy to receive a thank-you note will also be on hand. Card and board games will also be available at the gathering.

Near & Farr Friends meets from 2:30-4:30 p.m. every Thursday at the Onekama Township Hall for fun, games and lectures. There is no charge to attend the presentation. Donations are accepted to underwrite costs of hosting occasional speakers.

Near & Farr Friends is a program of the Portage Lake Association (PLA), a group of volunteers who are dedicated to making the Onekama area a great place in which to live, play and stay. Onekama Township Hall is located at 5435 Main St. (M-22).
