Beach Bums Fan Fest opens 2018 season

TRAVERSE CITY – For the first time in 2018, the gates of Wuerfel Park were opened as the Traverse City Beach Bums held its 13th annual Fan Fest.

All of the new amenities were on display, fans had their first chance to sample the new food offerings, and check out all of the great 2018 merchandise in the gift shop.

The yearly “Yellow/Navy” game was the highlight of the day’s events as the Beach Bums had their first chance to play in front of a live crowd. The Yellow team picked up a three-run fifth inning on their way to a 6-1 victory.

Will Kengor drove in the lone run for the Blue team with an RBI double that slammed off of the right field wall, scoring Kenny Peoples-Walls in the bottom of the first. The Yellow team responded in the top of the second when Isaac Benard led off with a double then scored on a Josh Hauser groundout. In the fifth, the Yellow team took the lead, putting up three runs in the frame, thanks to an RBI single by Orlando Rivera, and a two-run single by Isaac Benard.  The Yellow team added a couple more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Stephen Lohr and an RBI single by Benard.

The combination of John Havird, Adam Cornwell, and Seth Brenner led the Yellow team on the mound, allowing four hits throughout the contest. Havird went four innings with one walk and five strikeouts, Cornwell, who earned the win, struck out four in three innings of work, and Brenner closed the game with two perfect innings on the hill. On the Blue side, Reinaldo Lopez and Jordan Desguin combined for seven strikeouts in the losing effort.

Following the game, the players and coaches met fans in front of the clubhouse for a meet-and-greet, and autograph session. It was a perfect spring day at the ballpark and a great start to season number 13 of Traverse City Beach Bums baseball at Wuerfel Park.
