LUDINGTON — The Ludington Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) presented a $9,601.61 check to Friends of Ludington State Park (FLSP) this week, as the charity beneficiary of the 2018 Pure Ludington Brrrewfest held the last weekend in January.

The Friends of Ludington State Park provides the volunteers who help set up, serve at the taps and tear down after the Pure Ludington Brrrewfest held on the final Saturday of January and featuring more than 20 brewers.

“The Friends of Ludington State Park is grateful for this generous gift,” FLSP president Bob Sasin said.

“We are very grateful to have such a dedicated group of volunteers to help Brrrewfest, and one that helps to plan so many events at the state park,” Ludington Area CVB executive director Brandy Henderson said. “We continue to see a very successful Pure Ludington Brrrewfest and want to thank them for helping.”

The Friends of Ludington State Park will put the money toward its family-friendly, accessible playground planned to begin construction next month.

“We are getting closer to our fundraising goal for the new playground at the Hamlin Beach area of Ludington State Park,” Sasin said. “We need about $15,000 more to meet the $203,000 goal needed to cover the cost.”

“We’re excited that this year’s contribution is going to an accessible playground and another spot the community can enjoy. We hope the community steps up to help finish with that fundraising.”

Those interested in donating are encouraged to do so through the Community Foundation for Mason County at www.mason-foundation.org. Look for the FLSP playground project. Checks can also be mailed to Friends of Ludington State Park, P.O. Box 123, Ludington, MI 49431.

The two playscape playground will feature poured-in-place surfacing and ramping and a design to make it highly accessible to children of all abilities. It was designed by Sinclair Recreation using GameTime equipment. Local accessibility advocates Jamie Spore and Shelby Soberalski also helped FLSP guide the design to improve accessibility.

A volunteer build is scheduled for the week of June 4-8.

In 2017, the Ludington CVB awarded the Friends of Ludington State Park $13,000 from the 2016 Pure Ludington Brrrewfest that was put toward the playground project. In April, the Community Growth Alliance awarded the project a $2,000 placemaking grant. In the past week the Community Foundation for Mason County awarded a $5,65 grant for the playground.

The FLSP playground project also has received grant funding and previous support from the Community Foundation for Mason County, the Great Lakes Energy People Fund, the Michigan DNR, GameTime, LoveLudington, OxyChem and numerous personal foundations and donors and many park users.

Friends of Ludington State Park is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Donations are eligible for tax deductions according to one’s own income status.

A volunteer group, it supports projects that aid the park or the experience of park users that park is not able to fund. For membership information, visit www.ludingtonfriends.com, check the group’s Facebook page or email ludingtonstateparkfriends@gmail.com.
