KAY WAGNER: Reader appreciative of those with concern for her safety

TO THE EDITOR:

Last week I was a “pay it forward” recipient. During the winter I had to put air in three of my car tires quite a few times. Several people told me it was because of the cold weather and the old aluminum rims leaking, so I dutifully added air frequently and I patiently waited for warmer weather when I was told the problem would cease.

Last week, when the problem persisted, I called the tire place that is easy walking distance from my house to see what it would cost to nally take care of the problem.

Examination of the tires revealed at least one had broken down signicantly enough with cracks that the technician said he thought it would be dangerous to continue using it.

The tires, on the car since 2011, needed to be replaced but I didn’t have the money in my limited budget for new tires so I said the purchase would have to wait.

Karen Johnson, co-owner of Family Tire Service of Manistee, expressed concern for me when she sent me home and wouldn’t even charge me for putting silicone around the rims to stop the leaking.

A couple days later, on her way to work, she drove around the neighborhood (she only knew that I lived nearby) until she found my car, then knocked on my door and informed me that she and her husband Les were gifting four new tires to me “because it is the right thing to do,” she said.

I am very grateful to know that people I don’t even know would have that much concern for my safety.
