Fundraiser to benefit Mackinac Island trip

ONEKAMA — A  breakfast fundraiser will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday at the Glenwood Restaurant in Onekama to benefit a class field trip to Mackinac Island

All proceeds will go to a June 6 trip to Mackinac Island for all third-grade students at Onekama Consolidated Schools, a total of 39 students.

The day will include a ride over the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula, the 20-minute ferry ride to the Island, a horse-drawn carriage ride around the island, a tour of Fort Mackinac, lunch at the Grand Hotel and time to browse Island shops.

Prior to the trip, Beth McCarthy, owner of Onekama’s MacBeth & Co., will teach a class on etiquette to prepare the Third-Graders for their lunch at the Grand Hotel.

“Of the 39 students, we have 13 who have yet to cross the Mackinac Bridge and 25 who have not visited Mackinac Island,” said Onekama School third grade teacher Eva Bradford. “The day will be educational in many ways. Students will learn about Michigan History, the culture of the Island and experience the thrill of crossing from one Peninsula to the other. They will learn and stay on a schedule together with a packed agenda. A great capstone to the Third Grade experience.”
