Their efforts were to improve their already formidable writing skills and craft a short story. Wemlinger’s role was one of mentor and advisor. He says of his young charges, “These three students have tremendously vivid imaginations and have discovered that writing is a great way of channeling that. Really, all I did was ask them a few questions here and there and do some proof reading. The rest was all their effort.”

Eighth grader Mairin McCarthy took on the issue of school shootings. She wrote a touching story of being a family member and finding out that a cousin had been killed in a school shooting. Her motivation for writing the piece was to make herself feel what it must be like when something that “can’t happen here” does.

Eighth grader Maegan Hrachovina took on the issue of missing persons with her story about a friend who goes missing after entering a mysterious tower.

Seventh grader, Ryan Petrosky wrote a super hero thriller straight out of Marvel Comics. The Writers’ House culminated with each student reading their story to an assemblage of parents and teachers.

Megan McCarthy, middle school English teacher, who collaborated with Wemlinger said, “This Writers’ House was a huge enrichment to Onekama School District’s efforts toward making students ready for the world. Writing is such an important skill and we are lucky to have someone like John Wemlinger so close and so willing to help our students learn the craft of writing. I can’t thank him enough and I look forward to a similar collaboration next school year as well. “

John Wemlinger is the author of two novels, Winter’s Bloom and Operation Light Switch, which has been nominated as a finalist in Foreword Reviews Independent Book of the Year Award. He is currently completing his third novel, Before the Snow Flies which is set right in the Village of Onekama.
