These were the 10 most popular baby names in Michigan in 2017

WOODLAWN — The Social Security Administration has released the most popular baby names in the U.S. and Michigan seems to have followed the national trend with the most popular names in the state.

The most popular girl names in Michigan were (in order):

Emma; Ava; Olivia; Charlotte; and in fifth place, Amelia.

The most popular boy names in Michigan were (in order):

Liam; Noah; Oliver; Lucas; and in fifth place, Mason.

While the list in Michigan differs slightly from the national list, the most popular names nationwide are mostly the same.

The most popular boys name in the U.S. included Liam, Noah, William, James and Logan. The girls list included Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella and Sophia.

The SSA says pop culture has one again influenced the names that parents select as several names made a jump on the list that are likely connected to celebrities. Especially from reality TV.

For the boys, the name Wells jumped more than 500 spots to 915th. The SSA speculates that name became more popular thanks to a contestant on the hit TV show “The Bachelorette.”

On the flip side, little girls named Dream were on the rise, which is the same name that reality star Rob Kardashian gave his daughter in 2016.

Sports also played a role in boys name increases as a significant number of boys were named Nova, following Villanova’s NCAA championship basketball run in 2016.
