JUDY CUNNINGHAM: State representative candidate will put people first

TO THE EDITOR:

The candidate I support for our state representative is Kathy Wiejaczka from Empire in Leelanau County, who is running for the 101st District.

She is a strong woman, a mother, a nurse and a small business owner. She is a natural leader, extremely articulate and a thoughtful, intelligent person. Kathy has lived and worked in Northern Michigan for 36 years and knows it is a special place to be protected. She is a fighter and has grit.

What Kathy Wiejaczka doesn’t have is loyalty to any party ideology or special interests. She will be representing only the interests of Northern Michigan residents and putting “people first” when she goes to Lansing. We need strong women in Lansing.

Kathy worked in the public schools and understands that keeping students safe must be our first priority. She will fight for more school resources to protect students and more funding so that schools in northern Michigan will have the quality education they deserve. Our economy depends on great schools so our students can compete for 21st century jobs.

An article in the Detroit News from Feb. 20, 2017, states, “Michigan’s students are falling far behind their peers across the nation and Michigan is in the bottom 10 states for key subjects and grades, including early literacy.” Kathy knows we have to turn this around and invest in the young people who are our future.

As a small business owner, Kathy Wiejaczka believes small businesses are the foundation of our economy and the basis of real job growth. Small businesses make up 99 percent of U.S. employment and 64 percent of net new private-sector jobs. She will work to nurture new Michigan grown businesses.

The most sacred bond Michigan residents have with elected leaders is that they will protect our Great Lakes, water quality and environment. It is why we live here in the frozen north and it only makes good economic sense. Kathy Wiejaczka takes this public trust seriously.

Kathy knows that we need to get back to investing in Michigan before our infrastructure is too far-gone. We also need to invest in smart grid and broadband technology if our state is going to compete and thrive in the economy of the 21st century. We need to move out of our paralysis and move forward. Northern Michigan residents want a representative with a positive vision and that is Kathy Wiejaczka. She is willing to go to work to put “people first”.
