Collage and acrylics by Marion Riedl displayed at LACA

LUDINGTON — On display at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA) this summer will be Marion Riedl’s “Exploring Collage and Acrylics” exhibit.

The exhibit will be displayed in LACA’s Performance Hall Lobby Gallery from June 5 through July 28.

An artist reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. on June 8. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

A retired staff writer for the Ludington Daily News and an active volunteer at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts, Riedl has been known mostly for her craft show business which she began in 1995. She designs and creates Michigan applique potholders and towels as well as quilted, reversible placemats and runner sets.

She and her husband John, an oil painter, traveled summer weekends throughout western Michigan to participate in outdoor art/craft shows. While she continues to create her potholders and towels, the couple have left the art/craft show circuit and they now exhibit and sell their works at Avenue’s End Mini-Mall and in the LACA Gift Shop.

Her newest creations use collage, an art form using various recycled papers to create a painting; acrylic paint is used to accent the glued-down papers. She was introduced to this art form when she participated in a couple of collage classes taught by Linda Sandow at the arts center in the winter of 2017.

“After the very first class, I was hooked. I started looking for envelopes with a security pattern inside, old calendars, travel magazine pictures, even tissue boxes… anything paper that could be torn to create woods and fields, sky, water, old barns and seascapes. If I could not find the paper that I thought I needed, I started created my own pieces.”

Her business name is Creations by MIR, using the initials to her name, and she signs her new works with those initials.

The Ludington Area Center for the Arts is located in downtown Ludington at 107 S. Harrison St. It is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays noon to 3 p.m. as well as during special events. For more information email info@ludingtonartscenter.org or call (231) 845-2787.
