Featured workshops at the Ramsdell with Mary Wahr

MANISTEE — The Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts (RRCA) is excited to launch fun and engaging summer workshops June through August this summer.

Starting next week on June 11, float chalk on water, press paper into paint, use magazines, newspapers and a variety of different papers to paint with paper, learn about other cultures through the creation of art, and more. All classes meet in Classroom B from 10-11 a.m. No prior experience is required. This is open to families and there is a cost to attend each class. Schedule includes the following:

• June 11-14: Abstract painting – create a non-objective abstract painting that will become a book;

• June 18-19: Crayon Batik – paint with melted crayon;

• June 25-28: Art around the world – a few of our stops will be Australia, Africa and Central America;

• July 16-19: Surrealist workshop – float chalk on water, press paper into paint and more;

• July 23-24: Collage workshop – Magazines, newspapers and a variety of different papers to paint with paper; and

• Aug 13-16: Art around the world – visit more cultures through art.

Mary Wahr is a local art educator working and creating in Northern Michigan. She teaches art classes at Manistee Catholic Central. Her passions for fractals stemmed from her master’s thesis, which is entitled, “The Art of Fractals for the Mathematically Challenged.”

She first learned about fractals on National Public Radio while commuting to her classes. She later learned about the Surrealist technique of decalcomania, a printing process that creates fractal patterns in paint. You can enough follow her on Facebook or her blog.
