MANISTEE — After just two weeks of play in 2018, the Manistee Saints have lost one of their top pitchers for the season.

Right-handed starter Max Ludka informed the team that he will play for the Muskegon Clippers from here on out, after playing in two games for the Saints.

The Clippers are a collegiate team playing in the Great Lakes Collegiate Baseball League.

Ludka has started two games for the Saints this season, pitching 11 innings while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out 14.

Manistee manager Tyrone Collins said that the opportunity to play for the Clippers was too good to pass up.

“He loved the Saints,” Collins said. “(But) the Clippers lost one of their pitchers, and he’s one of the best pitchers in the area, so they called him. The difference, quite honestly, is that we play 35 or 40 games a year, and they play 80 games a year.

“We’ll grit our teeth and wish him the best.”

Ludka is coming off a successful college season in which he started 13 games for Aquinas College in Grand Rapids with a record of 5-4, an ERA of 3.12 and 78 strikeouts in 75 innings pitched.

The loss of Ludka puts Collins in a bit of a bind. Manistee is already without two other pitchers due to injury, Kyle Gorski and Tyler Waslowski. Gorski is day-to-day with an undisclosed arm injury and Waslowski could pitch this weekend, but will likely not start a game.

“It’s definitely a big hit, he was one of the top two in our (starting) rotation,” Collins said. “But the games must go on, we have other people who will step up for sure, and we’re in the process of trying to find another pitcher or two ourselves.”

Manistee will host the Michigan Sports Academy of Howell in a four-game series at Rietz Park this weekend, starting with the first of two doubleheaders on Saturday, June 9, first pitch at 1 p.m.
