MANISTEE — The Lakeside Club of Manistee recently welcomed Jeannie Lewis as the organization’s first Poet Laureate.

She is regaled the group with readings from her two published works, “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Gate” at a meeting on June 7.

The Lakeside Club began in 1885 as a women’s literary club dedicated to cultural enlightenment and service. By 1902 they decided it was time for Manistee to have its own library, and initiated the first steps for that purpose. In 1905, the Andrew Carnegie Library located at Maple and First streets opened its doors to the community.

The Lakeside Club still supports the library with its major fundraiser, the Tour of Homes, this year being held on July 21. Visit www.LakesideClubManistee.org for further information.
