Petitions available for city council election in November

MANISTEE — For those who want to run for a seat on the Manistee City Council, petitions are now available for the first, third, fifth, and seventh district City Council seats.

Council members for these districts will be elected for two year terms at the Nov. 6 election.

The current council members on their respective seats with terms ending are Dale Cooper, first district; mayor pro-tem Roger Zielinski, third district; mayor Jim Smith, fifth district; and Erin Pontiac with the seventh district.

Smith and Zielinski filed for re-election. No other information is available at this time.

The following qualifications are required to apply:

• Applicants must be a registered voter of the City of Manistee for not less than two years, immediately preceding the filing deadline;

• Residents must currently be registered and live in the open district; and

• Applicants must be at least 25 years old as of the filing deadline.

Nominating petitions are available at the City Clerk’s office. Petitions require 25 signatures of registered voters from within district, but less than 50.

Deadline for returning petitions is 4 p.m. on Aug. 7.
