Youth program here

A DNR-funded youth work program is underway in the Manistee area. The $15,000 project will employ 10 youngsters to spruce up and reclaim existing city parks until August 25. Earlier this week at Rietz Park, some of the participants trimmed limbs and pruned tree foliage.

Local students at Blue Lakes

Several local students will be attending the Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake for the second summer session. Keely Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hill is attending as is Julie Edel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thaddeus Edel. Also attending is Joseph Jennings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jennings.

60 YEARS AGO

Forestry Club visits Nursery, Box Board

The Harlan Forestry Club, made up of 16 members, recently went on a tour of the Chittenden Nursery and American Box Board Co. At the Chittenden Nursery the group saw the small trees in growing stages of seedlings to year old stock, and were told about the overhead irrigation system used there. After a lunch at Orchard Beach State Park, the club went to the American Box Board Co. plant at Filer City and were told about the complete process of paper making.

80 YEARS AGO

Hollingsworth and Olsen are winners

Walter Hollingsworth and Erwin Olsen were the winners in the Board of Education election held yesterday. Hollingsworth polled 362 votes while Olsen had 320 votes.

Water temperature

Temperatures at the city beaches reached a new high today, air registering 82 degrees and water 70 degrees at Fifth Avenue Beach this noon.
