Szymarek Park sparks hot session

Nearly 60 people stormed the City Council chambers last night in the continuing effort to help the council make a decision concerning the application for federal funds to improve Red Szymarek Park. The special hearing last night, before the regular council meeting, was called to reach a decision on the matter. But at the regular meeting which followed the hearing, the council postponed the decision until the next meeting August 15. The application deadline is September 1 for the city to remain eligible for funds for the $80,000 project. Even before City Clerk, Jerry Skiera, could finish his presentation to the council about the Parks Commission decision to try for the funds, angry citizens began to voice their views.

Attend Tiger game

Richard Clift and Harry Kaldahl took the two Kaleva teams, the Kaleva Tigers and the Kaleva Yankees, to Detroit yesterday to see the Tiger-Boston game.

Committee on courthouse to meet

The special new courthouse committee of the County Board of Supervisors will meet tomorrow morning at the courthouse for the purpose of going over plans for the proposed buildings with the architect R.V. Gay. He will explain revisions in the plans, some of which were suggested by the supervisors during their last special session.

Former publisher pays visit

Charles J. O’Malley, who with his brother founded the Manistee Advocate here in 1883, was a visitor in Manistee yesterday on his way to Mackinac Island. Stopping at the office of The News-Advocate to recall old-time days here, the former publisher told of his many interesting experiences in newspaper work all over the world since leaving the city in 1885.
