FRANKFORT — Traverse City resident Michael Scott was recognized for 50 years of membership and active service in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary this past Friday.

In appreciation for his commitment, 11 fellow Auxiliarists from Chicago and Northwest Indiana, trailered two boats to assist Scott with patrols and provide free vessel safety checks at the local harbors. These 11 represent hundreds of Auxiliarists and active Duty Coast Guard personnel who have benefited from Scott’s generosity and training.

The crew at Coast Guard Station Frankfort hosted the celebration in the morning, and in the afternoon, BM2 Joshua Cohen evaluated four boat crews who successfully achieved the Operational Excellence Award. Operational Excellence challenges boat crews to demonstrate their superior boat handling skills and expertise executing search and rescue operations.

This award represents the highest level of crew training, boat handling skills and commitment to safe boating. On average, only three or four boat crews successfully achieve Operational Excellence in the Coast Guard’s Ninth Western Region annually.

This is the third year that Auxiliarists have traveled from the southern end of Lake Michigan to assist Scott and Station Frankfort in safe boating activities and skills training.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939. For more information, please visit www.cgaux.org
