Costumes add flair to Victorian festival

As in years past, the beard, mustache, hat contest will be an interesting part of the Victorian Port City Festival. The event is being sponsored by Kathy Stringham and Barb Swinehart of Victorian Vanities. Categories for the contest are as follows: Most Uniquely Victorian Beard, Most Unlikely Victorian Mustache and Most Uniquely Victorian Hat. One prize will be given to each category.

Bear Lake Days

Bear Lake Days are approaching again. This year they are August 23 and 24. This is an annual event sponsored by local folks, and usually brings many people into town. There will be kids’ contests of all kinds Saturday with prizes. The grownups have other a horseshoe and log sawing contest. The parade will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

80 YEARS AGO

Plans made for school

The Manistee Public Schools will open for the regular work of the school year on September 6. During the week preceding Labor Day, teachers will be called together for a series of meetings in preparation for the beginning of regular class work on the day following Labor Day. Parents are urged to have all pupils report to the various school buildings for enrollment on September 2.

Big airplane

Coming to Manistee-Blacker Airport is a 17 passenger Ford tri-motor all metal airliner, owned by Major Leslie G. Mulzer, veteran U.S. Army Air Corps reserve and commercial flyer with over 21 years of flying time to his credit. The giant airliner will be here for the purpose of carrying passengers on flights over the city at low fares.
