MANISTEE — The August Garden of the Month for the Manistee Spirit of the Woods Garden Club was awarded to Joan Kolk.

Joan and Brad Kolk have lived at home at 486 Fourth St. for around 20 years, and she has been gardening for the last 36 years. She was awarded a gift certificate to Field of Dreams Nursery in Bear Lake.

Among her many flowers are day lilies, oriental and asiatic lilies, hostas, calibrachoa, gladiolas, columbine, beautiful yellow conna, geraniums, flox, shasta daisies, liatris and soon to bloom hibiscus — this is Joan’s favorite flower.

She also treasurers her grandmother’s iris and will always remember the gardening lessons by her father Chuck Herbert. She recalls when a home near Herbert Funeral Home was physically moved along with the peony bushes to a new location on County Line Road. Twenty years later when Joan and Brad moved to Fourth Street, the peonies moved again for a third time and are still prospering with love and care. She is very enthusiastic about the garden club.

The next garden club meeting will be held at noon on Sept. 10 at the Oak Grove Hospitality Center in Manistee. The featured speaker will be Karen Larsen with a program on landscaping design for small spaces.
