Chip swimmers perform well, look promising

HAMILTON — Manistee swimming turned in some good performances at a meet in Hamilton Thursday.

Though the Chippewas fell to Hamilton 105.50-65.50, they were competitive with Otsego, falling 88-85.

Manistee head coach Corey Van Fleet was happy with what he saw from his swimmers at this point early on in the season.

“All of our kids had good times and we swam pretty well,” Van Fleet said. “It was a good meet. We were in with good competition and it was a fun meet.”

Lauren Mendians took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.88 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.87. Jaelyn Thomas took second in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle with times of 2:14.67 and 5:55.46, respectively.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Anna Lee took fourth with a 2:39.64. Ginger Hiipakka took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:19.63.

Van Fleet was able to get some of his younger swimmers in the water to gain valuable meet experience and was happy with the way they performed.

“Everybody swam well,” Van Fleet said. We’re looking forward to having some of our younger people get ready for the conference meet and that happened. We had a good day.”

Manistee had strong showings in the relays. The team of Thomas, Mendians, Hiipakka and Lee won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:14.42 — which was over 14 seconds faster than the second-place time — while Maddy Fox, Amber Miller, Haley Johnson and Reanna Sutter took third with a 4:50.54.
