Hospice of Michigan offers free grief support programs

MASON COUNTY — Life without a loved one can be overwhelming, even long after that person has passed.

To help residents in the area cope with grief, Hospice of Michigan offers programs in a supportive and caring environment to work through the loss.

Support groups and events are open to everyone, regardless of whether their loved one received services from Hospice of Michigan. All grief support programs are free of charge, but donations are welcome to help support the nonprofit’s programming. Registration is required for all groups.

• Living On is an ongoing groups where grief and loss topics are addressed as they arise, depending upon the interests of those attending the group. The focus of these groups is to express feelings and experiences related to the loss in a supportive, caring and non-judgmental environment.

Locally, the group is offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month at Hospice of Michigan office, located at 932 N. Mitchell St. in Cadillac. To register call Will Gasper at (231) 444-3350.

• Journey Through Grief is a series of weekly sessions offering insights and coping skills for an adult’s journey through grief. Practical handouts are provided with each session. Advance registration is required.

The program is offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 2 through Oct. 23 at the Hospice of Michigan office in Cadillac. To register call Will Gasper at (231) 444-3350.

• Men Overcoming Loss is a four-part series presented by Will Gasper, an expert on grief and loss and Licensed Professional Counselor for 14 years. The series will explore the unique dynamics of men who are grieving.

The program is offered on Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 at Hospice of Michigan office, located at 5177 W. US-10, Ste. B in Ludington. To register call Katie Gedraitis at (231) 845-3423.

• Crocheting Through Grief offers participants basic crocheting skills as they discuss grief and loss topics based on the interests of those in attendance. Blankets created during the session will be donated to a local hospital. The focus of the group is to practice self-care skills of “creativity” and “giving back.” Beginners and experts are invited to participate.

The program is offered from 4 to 5:30 p.m. the second Monday of every month at the  Hospice of Michigan office in Ludington. To register call Katie Gedraitis at (231) 845-3423.

• Fly and Remember Memorial Service brings people together to decorate and fly kites in memory of loved ones. This event is free and open to the public (kite-making materials provided).

The event takes place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Waterfront Park (Bandshell), located at 1122 William St. in Ludington.  To register call Katie Gedraitis at (231) 845-3423.

Another event will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Samaritas Senior Living, located at 460 Pearl St. in Cadillac. To register call Will Gasper at (231) 444-3350.

• Writing Through Loss – Virtual Touch Program is hosted by Kathryn Holl, MA, LPC. Holl is a grief support services manager with over 20 years of experience as an educator and counselor, providing support, training and resources to individuals, family and community via counseling, professional workshops and memorial services.
