House panel OKs casino

Manistee’s Little River Band of Ottawa Indians plans to “bless the grounds” on Dec. 13 at a 435-acre site near the corner of M-22 and US-31, where a proposed casino would be built. The plan to build the casino cleared a hurdle Thursday with a state House panel’s approval of a compact, moving the matter to the full House for consideration. Four tribal casinos are proposed for Manistee, Mackinaw City, Battle Creek and New Buffalo.

Salvation Army facilities dedicated

Lt. Colonel William H. Roberts gave the dedication address Sunday at the dedication of the Salvation Army’s new facilities at 419 River Street this past weekend. Rehabilitation of the building began last March with monies collected from a fund drive conducted in the county last year. The building now houses the Salvation Army store, offices, a church chapel, and living quarters upstairs. Plans for the future include community rooms to also be located in the building.

Demonstration at hospital

A seniority rights dispute fueled by deadlocked contract and wage negotiations has resulted in a ‘demonstration’ by employees of West Shore Hospital. However, a spokesperson for the workers emphasized today that there has been no work stoppage or slow down despite increasing concern about the safety of sign-carrying picketers pacing up and down the right-of-way of US-31. Union representatives and hospital administrators have been negotiating since a three-year contract expired October 1.

Buys Bear Lake Bar

Rex Hughes of Grand Rapids has purchased the Bear Lake Bar from Berwyn Bruce, who took possession this week. The Hughes family moved to Bear Lake from Grand Rapids a few weeks ago and are occupying the Florence Kuenzer house on Wise Street in Bear Lake.
