KALEVA — Residents in the Village of Kaleva will have another option for their shopping.

Construction is underway on a new location of Dollar General at 14128 Nine Mile Road in Kaleva. Construction workers broke ground in late summer and the store is projected to open in late winter 2019, according to Dollar General spokeswoman Angela Petkovic.

“When choosing store locations, meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority. The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” she said. “We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10 minute drive. We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.”

Jim Draze, chairperson of Kaleva’s planning commission said there was controversy within the community regarding the development.

“Some folks feel that it will be detrimental to existing businesses,” he said.

According to Draze, Michigan law prohibits the village from picking and choosing what businesses to allow.

“Local government doesn’t get to say yes or no,” he explained. “The small number of people who objected wanted local government to say, ‘That’s not the kind of business we want.’ But that’s not an option available to government.”

Draze added that the store is in full compliance with zoning regulations and county regulations.

“The property along Nine Mile is zoned for commercial business, which generally allows for retail as long as they fit into the zoning classifications and they have property that is correctly zoned, the building is the right size, they have enough parking and things along those lines,” he said.

Draze felt that the new development has potential to increase commercial traffic within the village.

“Dollar General wouldn’t pick a location where they wouldn’t get any business,” he said. “It is going to be up to the other businesses to play off of Dollar General.”

The store opening will also allow residents to shop locally, according to Draze.

“Products that village residents might have purchased in Manistee they can now purchase in Kaleva,” he said. “Having more retail available within the village actually is protective, if the retail businesses work together. They learn how to provide a mix of products that keeps people shopping here rather than outside the village as much.”

Petkovic said the store will employ approximately 6 to 10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store. Applications for available positions can be found online at www.dollargeneral.com/careers.
