PET CORNER: Remember Homeward Bound during this giving season

‘Tis the season to wish one another joy and love and peace. The Manistee County Humane Society and Homeward Bound Animal Shelter hope that you find all this and more during the holiday season and all through the year.

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

There are many worthwhile community organizations to consider this giving season. Homeward Bound is one of them. To continue to make life better for animals in need, Homeward Bound always needs monetary donations. But there are several easy ways that you can help Homeward Bound along with writing that check.

Manistee County Humane Society/Homeward Bound Animal Shelter is enrolled in several programs that make it easy for the community to support the shelter.

1. Direct Your Dollars Program

SpartanNash owns and operates 139 stores in eight states and Family Fare in Manistee is one of them. Through their Direct Your Dollars program, eligible nonprofit organizations can earn $1,000, simply by collecting $150,000 in eligible receipts from any SpartanNash stores. Homeward Bound is one of those eligible nonprofits. Save your receipts from Family Fare and bring or send them to Homeward Bound.

2. AmazonSmile

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that lets you enjoy most of the same wide selection of products featured on Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5 percent of the purchase price to the eligible charitable organization of your choice.

Manistee County Humane Society is a registered nonprofit on AmazonSmile. On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you will be prompted to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. Under “pick your own charitable organization”, type in Manistee County Humane Society and hit “search” then “select.” AmazonSmile will remember your charity selection, and then every eligible purchase you make will result in a donation to MCHS. You can use your existing Amazon.com account on AmazonSmile but you must log into AmazonSmile instead of Amazon for this all to happen.

If you would like to support Manistee County Humane Society/Homeward Bound by purchasing something we need, check our “wish list” and “shelter needs list” on AmazonSmile. First go to Accounts & Lists. Select “Find a List or Registry”. Type in Homeward Bound Animal Shelter and hit search. The items on these lists are things that Homeward Bound would appreciate at any time.

3. “Pound For Pound” Program

Parkdale Animal Hospital helps Homeward Bound by providing a match to your donation of pet food – “pound for pound and can for can.” Any pet food donation that is dropped off at Parkdale Animal Hospital will be matched and delivered to Homeward Bound. So if you are thinking of making a food donation to Homeward Bound not only during the holidays but any time throughout the year, take it to Parkdale Animal Hospital first and it will be doubled.

If you are short on cash, but want to give back this coming year, then give some of your time. Manistee County Humane Society/Homeward Bound can always use volunteers. We have opportunities for volunteers to walk dogs, cuddle cats, do laundry, and volunteer at fundraisers, just to name a few. Contact the shelter to find out more.

If you would like to make a donation to Homeward Bound, our address is: Manistee County Humane Society, P.O. Box 144, Manistee, MI 49660 or you can go to our website at www.homewardboundmanistee.org and hit the donation button to donate by credit card.

And remember this holiday season to keep your pets safe. Keep people food out of the reach of your pet. Don’t leave your pet alone in a room with lit candles. Keep holiday plants such as holly and mistletoe out of reach of pets.

Consider leaving the tinsel off your tree if you have a cat. Secure your Christmas tree to keep it from falling over if your dog bumps it or your cat climbs it. Hanging lemon-scented car air fresheners in the tree may deter your cat from climbing it.

Manistee County Humane Society wishes you, your family and your pets a wonderful holiday season.
