Sara Verschueren’s ‘Into the Wild’ on display at LACA in December

LUDINGTON — Wild life artist Sara Verschueren’s “Into the Wild” exhibit will be displayed in the performance Hall gallery at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts during the month of December.

An artist reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. at the center, 107 S. Harrison St., on Dec. 14. This free reception is open to the public and will include refreshments.

Verschueren has been fascinated with animals and nature her whole life.

“I was born right here in Ludington and live in Fountain with my husband, our three kids and many animals. I am a self-taught artist and I paint very intuitively,” Verschueren said.

She said her favorite way to portray the animals she paints is with acrylic paints.

“I find that I can with acrylic paint, give so much feeling and depth to the animals, which really speaks to what I am trying to do when I paint,” she said. “I also enjoy drawing with colored pencil. To me, there is something so magical with taking a pencil and bringing forth life on a blank piece of paper.”

Verschueren said her inspiration on how and what to paint comes to her very organically.

“I usually don’t have a set animal I want to do, but rather I let the animal choose me. When I see an image there is something inside me that says, I need to paint that,” she said. “I feel that every animal has a story and a soul and I feel that is my gift, to translate that story for the animals and share it with the world.

“My hope as an artist is that my paintings and drawings with touch some parts of the wild spaces still left within us all.”
