Suicide attempt thwarted by emergency personnel

MANISTEE — A man jumped into Lake Michigan on Saturday after talking with law enforcement and first responders for hours.

The City of Manistee Police and Fire departments responded to a call for a suicidal subject at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Saturday to the Fifth Avenue Pier.

The man state he was going to jump off the pier, according to a press release from the City of Manistee Police.

A command post was established at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Manistee. Members of the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office and Manistee Police Department deployed onto the pier to make contact to try to rectify the situation, according to police.

The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a rescue contingent in the channel, on the pier and in Lake Michigan while a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter provided support.

After two hours of intense negotiating, the man jumped into Lake Michigan, according to police.

He was immediately rescued from the water by United States Coast Guard personnel. The man was brought ashore and was treated by Manistee City Fire/EMS and transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital for evaluation.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard and Munson Manistee EMS assisted at the scene.
