Looking Back for Jan. 9

The J.J. Newberry Store was one of the many popular stores in downtown Manistee for many years. The store burned to the ground twice and the Manistee Inn is located at the former location of the store.

VFW break-in

A burglary of the V.F.W was reported to the police yesterday morning by an employee who discovered the break-in. Police arrived at the scene to find that the pool table, cigarette machine, jukebox and a TV game had all been damaged. The coin boxes from there were pried off and opened and $45 or more in change was estimated to have been taken. Bingo money amounting to $205 was also discovered missing, as was an undetermined amount of cash from the register.

Manistee vicinity schools must make decision

June 1, 1959, has been officially set as the deadline when the pupil-sending districts to Manistee High School must have made their decisions and informed the Manistee Board of Education whether or not they have annexed to the Manistee school district. This decision was made during a lengthy meeting of the school board Monday night attended by representatives of the “sending” districts – Filer City, Filer Township, Eastlake, Parkdale, Newland, Tomaszewski and Merritt of Manistee Township, and Stronach of Stronach Township. Manistee is faced with this problem – it would probably be able to use existing facilities for its own pupils for some time, but its growing enrollment, along with that of the area now served, would tax its facilities and make a new high school building necessary.

Good news

“Prospects look excellent indeed in regard to state assistance for Manistee,” said Roy Overpack this morning. Today was his first day in the office this year – for he just returned Saturday evening from Lansing where he had attended the inauguration of Governor Fitzgerald. His remark regarding state assistance, he said, was in connection with the proposed Orchard Beach improvements, the proposed Lakeside Drive from Ludington to Manistee and the Manistee River and harbor improvements.

First January thunderstorm in years

The first January thunderstorm that ever visited Manistee in the memories of local Coast Guardsmen broke over the city this forenoon. Lightning flashed across the sky accompanied by rolls of thunder and the rain pelted down in its hardest April manner.
