Founder of Benzonia Academy next subject of lecture series

BENZONIA — Stacy Leroy Daniels will present “The Rev. James Barr Walker, Jr., The Forgotten Founder of the Benzonia Colony” during the next Benzonia Academy Lecture series.

The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. on Jan. 10 at the Benzie Area Historical Museum.

Besides being the motivating force behind the formation of the Benzonia Colony by securing prospective settlers and serving as its chief financing backer, Rev. Walker (1805-1887) served as chairman of the Grand Traverse Colony Association. He later became resident pastor and first president of the Grand Traverse College (Benzonia Academy).

Most notably his chance encounter with Archibald Jones convinced the latter to move to Benzonia to pursue his business interests in “canal building” by forming the Benzie Co. River Improvement Co., an endeavor that resulted in the unfolding of the epochal “tragedy/comedy” of Crystal Lake.

The Benzie Area Historical Society offers the Benzonia Academy Lectures on the second Thursday of each month. The Benzie Area Historical Museum is located at 6941 Traverse Ave., Benzonia.

Admission is by donation. Call Barb Mort, executive director, at (231) 882-5539 for more information.
