The Fisherman’s Center was a popular place for fishermen to go and was located on the north end of Manistee Lake in the 1960s.

Local boxers fight in Silver Gloves

Timothy Stapleton and Randy Hansen represented the Manistee Boxing Club in the Silver Gloves competition here last Sunday. Stapleton won his first bout of the tournament but lost the second one on a close decision, giving him a runner-up medal. Although he lost his first fight, Stapleton was also given a runner-up medal.

Howes is commission chairman

Marilla Republican Roy Howes has been elected to serve a third year as Chairman of the Manistee County Board of Commissioners. Howes, a two-year veteran of the county commission, was re-elected to the chairmanship at the commission’s first meeting of the year yesterday. John Grabowski, who represents Manistee was re-elected as vice-chairman.

Store is pay station

The Dykstra Variety Store will be the pay station for telephone bills in Arcadia. This became effective earlier this month.

Auto License Bureau to visit county

Mrs. Raymond Morey of the Manistee Auto Bureau announces that she will be at the Kaskinen Motor Company in Kaleva from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on January 24 to issue auto licenses and at Bear Lake on January 31 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Stay off thin ice

“City Manager Otto Damrow has requested me to warn everybody in Manistee and the surrounding county that the ice on Manistee Lake is now extremely unsafe for anyone to venture upon, and that, furthermore, any such a venture would probably end in a drowning case,” emphasized City Police Chief Roy Hebner this noon.

Fees payable for dog tags

The office of the city treasurer will now accept license fees from owners of Manistee’s 607 registered dogs, according to City Clerk John Watson. If the fees are paid before March 1, they will be 50 cents for males and unsexed dogs, and $1 for females. If, however, they are not paid until March 1 or after, they will double in size, becoming $1 for males and unsexed dogs and $2 for females.
