Onekama takes second, third at Crystal Mountain

THOMPSONVILLE — The Onekama ski team participated in a Lake Michigan Ski Conference meet at Crystal Mountain Wednesday. The Portager girls took second with 55 points — a mere eight points behind first-place Glen Lake — and Benzie Central (70) took third. The Portager boys took third with 60 points while Glen Lake took first with 47. Benzie Central (57) took second.

Onekama’s Michayla Bell paced the Portager girls in the giant slalom by finishing her two runs in 45.52 seconds — good for third place. Alora Sundbeck took fifth with a 47.16, Nike Waeljegaard finished eighth with a 57.13 and Heloise Decoster rounded out the scoring with a 58.51 that put her in ninth place. Brooke Calvert posted a 1:10.86 that did not count toward Onekama’s team score.

In the slalom, Sundbeck took third overall by finishing her two runs in 1:03.77. Bell (1:06.18) took fourth, Hilda Anthun (1:20.62) finished 11th and Waeljegaard took 12th with a 1:23.04. Calvert posted a time of 1:45.83 that did not count toward the team score.

In the boys giant slalom, Onekama’s Joe Buswinka took first overall with a combined time of 38.44. Kylar Thomas (42.74) took seventh, Andrea Scarfone (50.98) placed 11th and Colin VanVoorst (51.77) finished 12th. Briten VanVoorst (52.01), Sam Mosher (52.26) and Ben Granger (52.62) posted non-scoring times for the Portagers.

Buswinka placed third in the slalom with a combined time of 55.07. Thomas (58.52) took fifth, Mosher (1:20.28) finished ninth and Colin VanVoorst (1:25.65) ended up in 12th place for the Portagers. Briten VanVoorst (1:32.18) posted a time that did not count toward Onekama’s team score.

The Portagers next compete in the Cadillac Invite at Caberfae Tuesday at 10 a.m.
