Factory bringing 35 new jobs

The Scorpions are headed toward Manistee. The hottest news of 1999 in the snowmobile business might be made right here in Manistee as SRP Co., LLC plans to start manufacturing a brand new top-of-line snowmobile under the legendary brand name Scorpion. The former Excello building (Manistee Iron Works), a part of the Manistee Renaissance Zone, will be the manufacturing site.

40 YEARS AGO

Jaycettes honored

Manistee’s outstanding Jaycettes were honored in ceremonies held last night and selected for their work were: Pat Veach, Jeanne Strevey, Kathy LeFurge, Sue Mark and Karen Rodgers. The Jaycettes outstanding projects were recognized including Mittens for Manistee, Hayride, International Days and Strawberry Shortcake.

Madrigal Singers

The Manistee High School Madrigal Singers received a I rating at the Solo and Ensemble festival held last Saturday in Glen Lake. The singers were commended on a “fine job”, and their “good control of the pieces”. Those singing are: Diane DePeel, Terri Kolb, Pauline Jerumbo, Ronald Swanson, Russ Chilson, Robert Swanson, Debby Weeks, Barb Swanson, Bill Lakos, Sue Lakos, Brian Barto, Eric Barker, Gail Badalamente and Linda Strouf. Singing solos at the Festival were Sue Lakos, Ronald Swanson, Robert Swanson, receiving a II rating and Terri Kolb receiving a III rating.

60 YEARS AGO

Kaleva beats Arcadia

Kaleva defeated the Arcadia Trojans 61 to 52 Friday night. It was a game marked by heavy fouling and ended with only four Arcadia players on the floor. Gil Piesczak had 19 points, Leonard Krause had 11 and Gerald Peterson had 10 for Kaleva. Steve Tondu made 17 points, Jack Brown had 13 and Robert Robbins had 10 for Arcadia.

80 YEARS AGO

Lundbom is new president

Oscar F. Lundbom became the new president of the Manistee County Savings Bank today, having been elected to succeed the late Wilbur James Gregory at a meeting of the board of directors yesterday. Chelsea E. Foy, was elected to succeed Mr. Lundbom as cashier and Paul W. Groth was named assistant cashier.

Steffes coming here

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.M. Steffes, formerly pastor of Guardian Angels Church here and now located in Grand Rapids, will be the honored guest at a special Knights of Columbus banquet meeting here Monday night, it was announced today. The dinner will be held at the hall starting at 6:30 p.m.
