Frostbite Chili Cook-off set for Saturday

MANISTEE — Nothing takes the chill off a cold winter day than something warm and tasty to eat like chili.

The 2019 Frostbite Chili Cook-off will be taking place at from 3-5:30 p.m. on Saturday at 11 locations in downtown Manistee. The event is free to the public and they are encouraged to come out to vote on the best tasting chili.

People will have that opportunity between 3 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. on Saturday to try and rate 11 different types of chili at the annual Manistee Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Frostbite Chili Cookoff. The signature sponsor is the Ideal Kitchen with other sponsors being T.J.’s Pub, Moving Spirit and the DDA.

February is usually the time most Northern Michigan residents are getting a touch of “Cabin Fever” and the DDA is hoping this will bring plenty of people to the downtown area.

DDA’s Rachel Brooks said there are many interesting types of chili for people to taste.

“There are some really creative names of the chili they will be serving up,” said Brooks. “It sounds like there are going to be lots of interesting chili out there this weekend.”

Brooks said it would be a fun occasion for the whole family.

“The community and visitors that come downtown that day really enjoy it,” said Brooks. “It’s a great day for the downtown because they shop, go to different stores and have dinner. It is really a full day for our community members and visitors. It’s also nice to have between 300 and 400 people come through our shops.”

An awards presentation to announce the winners of the cook-off will be held at the Norther Channel Brewery at approximately 6:30 p.m. after all the tally sheets have been tabulated. Tally sheets will be available at all the participating locations and people will have the opportunity to rate each chili they taste from 1 to 5 with a score of 5 being the best.

“They are competing for bragging rights as T.J.’s Pub won it last year, so we will see who wins it this year,” said Brooks.

Locations that will be serving up chili include:

• Wahr Hardware: Bombastic Yet Bold BBQ Chili

• Bluefish: Double Trouble

• Northern Spirits: Northern Spice Chili Co.

• CC Jewelers: One Jewel of a Chili

• Snyder’s Shoes: Carne Asada Steak Chili

• T.J.’s Pub: Mike’s Championship Chili

• The Ideal Kitchen: Bloody Mary Chili

• Moving Spirits: Cole’s Favorite Chili
