Reader: Help stop ordinance prohibiting consumption of marijuana in public

TO THE EDITOR:

The Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act allows municipalities to authorize consumption in a public place. The city manager Thad Taylor and city attorney George Saylor have put before Manistee City Council an ordinance to prohibit the public consumption of marijuana in the city of Manistee.

On March 5, City Council voted unanimously to adopt this ordinance (the first vote, it takes two votes to enact).

We have two more meetings to stop this ordinance from being voted into existence. A work session takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 and a meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on March 19 (final vote) on the third floor of City Hall, located at 70 Maple St.

We need to fill council chambers on those two nights, step to the microphone and voice our disagreement. If we don’t, this will become law in our town against the will of the voters.

Show up and speak up.

There are many more important topics that need to be worried about than whether you can use weed in public. It absolutely disgusts me how much time and effort they put into worrying about this but where is all the outrage when it comes to the mismanagement of this city and where is all the people coming to speak up about all that is wrong with it?
