CASEVILLE TWP. — Spotted stranded on some precarious ice on the Saginaw Bay, a 16-year-old dog ended up being rescued by firefighters Saturday morning.

About 9 a.m. on March 23, Huron County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 8500 block of Crescent Beach Rod in Caseville Township after area residents called to report a Cocker Spaniel-type dog on some unstable ice about 200 feet offshore. The dog appeared to be wandering in circles, not coming back to shore.

At the time, the dog’s owner was unknown, reports Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson.

Caseville firefighters also arrived at the scene with ice rescue gear. One fireman suited up and retrieved the dog while being tethered to a colleague.

Upon being returned to shore, the dog was taken to Caseville Animal Clinic for an evaluation. An implanted chip allowed authorities to identify the dog’s owner as being from the Flint area. However, initial attempts to contact the owner were stymied by the listed phone number being disconnected, Hanson said.

The dog was then taken to the Thumb Animal Shelter in Oliver Township. The shelter posted information on the incident and a photo of the dog on its Facebook page. About 90 minutes later, the dog’s owner contacted the shelter and arrived to pick up her pet.

The dog’s 60-year-old owner was from Lapeer and was visiting relatives about a half-mile from where her dog had been found.

Deputies learned the dog, whose name is Dolly and is nearly 16 years old, had apparently gotten out of the house her owner was staying in early Saturday morning without her owner noticing. Deputies also learned Dolly has poor eyesight and hearing.

“The dog’s owner was appreciative to all involved who got her dog back to her,” Hanson said. “Dog owners are urged to update any addresses and pertinent information to records such as dog licenses and devices that can help find their owners in emergency situations.”
