Manistee powerlifters have success at state finals

IONIA — Manistee powerlifting wrapped up its season by competing in the Michigan High School Powerlifting Association state finals at Ionia High School March 9-10.

Three Chippewas brought home hardware, with Logan Buren placing sixth in the 155-pound weight class, Kaleigh Kamaloski finishing eighth in the 145-pound weight class and Landen Powers taking fifth in the junior varsity 194-pound weight class.

Also placing for Manistee were Blake Mikula (165-pound weight class, 11th place), Keelan Eskridge (181, 12th), Eric Smith (181, 13th), Keegan Bonzheim (155, 11th), Jesus Reyna-Cruz (145, 14th) and Torin Sheptock (165, 12th).

More than 100 schools competed at the meet, which featured both junior high and high school athletes. There were 13 weight classes for each division and the top 10 lifters of each division received medals.

Buren finished with a successful 290-pound squat, 200-pound bench press and 420-pound deadlift en route to a 910-pound total. Kamaloski hit a 645-pound total thanks to a 210-pound squat, 120-pound bench and 315-pound deadlift and Powers reached his 975-pound total with a 340-pound squat, 200-pound bench and 435-pound deadlift.
