Author of patriotic books visits Brethren Elementary School

The Brethren Elementary School recently had the privilege of having author Elisa Camara present her books; “Patriot Pup,” “Patriot Pup: Hotdogs and Baseballs” and her adult novel “American Brother.”

Camara created these books in honor and memory of her brother, Sgt. Mecot Camara who died in the October 1983 Beirut Bombing. His love of children and patriotism inspired the children’s series and Elisa’s dedication to the Beirut Marines lost in October inspired American Brother. Elisa traveled from Orlando, Florida on a Pure Michigan Book tour that started at Riverview Elementary School in Big Rapids.

The whole day she was reading her book Patriot Pup to each grade level, in which she actively engaged each group of students about patriotism and our Veterans. She also had help from local Marine Corps Veteran Corporal Richard Cunningham, who also served in Beirut, to help explain the importance of the dog tags and help answer questions about the Marine Corps.
