WILLIAM KRACHT: Questions numbers surrounding deer cull

I read the article, “Venison from cull donated to local pantries” published on March 28,┬ámaking a big deal about the fact that the recent deer kill had resulted in 380 pounds of meat being donated to local charitable organizations. The article also stated that 23 deer had been taken. That turns out to be 16.5 pounds of meet for each deer.

I am not a hunter, but it certainly seems like the deer that have been showing up in my yard would have a lot more than 16 pounds of meat each, so how do we explain this? Did the hunters only shoot baby deer? Was the deer processor so terribly inefficient?

Perhaps some of your readers who are hunters can explain this apparent discrepancy.
