MANISTEE — As the weather warms up, gardeners eagerly anticipate the growing season soon to start.

Sophia Street Community Garden offers raised beds for individuals and organizations to rent. The garden is located at the corner of Sophia and Michael Streets, across from Guardian Angels Church in Manistee. Each bed is four feet by eight feet.

The beds are especially popular for apartment and condo dwellers or for those who do not have good growing conditions at home. Gardeners agree to use organic and natural fertilizers and pest control. All skill levels are welcome.

“Sophia Garden is open to anyone in Manistee County, for individuals as well as organizations,” said Sharron Lemmer, long-time participant. “The beds are tended and harvested by those who rented it. We also have some shared spaces with asparagus, rhubarb and a variety of herbs.”

Sophia Street Community Garden is a volunteer-led program of Manistee Community Kitchen – a place where people gather, plant and grow together as a community.

For questions, contact Lemmer at (231) 887-7000 or sharronlemmer@gmail.com. Rental forms can be found at the garden space or online at manisteekitchen.org/gardens/.
