Manistee man seriously injured after motorcycle hits deer

MANISTEE — A Manistee man was seriously injured on Friday when his motorcycle struck a deer on Arthur Street in Manistee.

Manistee County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a serious injury crash around 4:53 p.m. Kelly Orton, 58, reportedly was traveling northbound on Arthur Street, when he struck a deer that entered the roadway.

Orton was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital for medical treatment.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the City of Manistee Fire Department, City of Manistee Police Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety, Manistee Township Fire Department and North flight Ambulance Services.

Manistee County’s Emergency Notification System “Code Red” was used to warn the public that the road was closed, and to avoid the area.

Police currently believe that alcohol was not factor.

The incident is still under investigation; no further details are available at this time.
