Chips sixth at Invitational

Manistee High School’s golf team opened the season with a sixth place finish in the Jayhawk Invitational on Thursday. A total of 19 teams were entered. Sean Totch tied for first place individually, carding a 73 on six birdies. Ryan Polcyn had a 90 and Chris Frankowiak showed a nice swing.

40 YEARS AGO

Now playing in Manistee

Now playing at the Vogue Theatre is “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again” the Walt Disney comedy will play at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. throughout the remainder of the week. Playing at the Chippewa Drive-In is the double feature of “Meatballs” starring Bill Murray and “Foul Play” starring Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. “Meatballs” starts at 8:50 p.m. and “Foul Play” starts at 11 p.m.

Bowling Association officers

Newly elected officers of the Manistee Bowling Association were announced today. They are: Norm Ware, John Gould, Ron Jozwiak, Dave Boertman, Charles Bachinski, Lucian Majeski (state president), Rich Franckowiak (secretary), Gerry Borowski (president), Russ Larsen and Stan Franckowiak.

60 YEARS AGO

Fairgrounds to have new grandstand

With “Fair Time” rapidly approaching, the grounds of the Manistee County Fair are taking on a different and exciting appearance as work progresses to get everything in readiness for the forthcoming event on the Labor Day weekend. The most spectacular of many improvements being made this year is the construction of a new steel-trussed grandstand which will have 15 rows of seats 162 feet long, capable of accommodating 1,500 people.

Beach news

Swimmers will surely crowd to Lake Michigan today with the air temperature at Fifth Ave. Beach registering 85 degrees this morning and the water 70 degrees. The fish were not biting when the lifeguard made his report at about 10:30 a.m.
