OCEANA COUNTY, MI – A father from South Bend, Indiana, and his adult daughter died in a crash Tuesday night on U.S. 31, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 9:44 p.m. on Tuesday on U.S. 31 near West Hammett Road in Oceana County’s Pentwater Township, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office.

Deputies identified the man and woman as Mark Hezlep, 52, and Casey Emmons, 26, respectively, the release reads. Hezlep died at a local hospital following the incident, while Emmons was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, but deputies noted fatigue may have played a role, according to the release.

Investigators believe Hezlep was driving a 2013 GMC Yukon northbound on U.S. 31 near West Hammett when the vehicle drifted off the roadway and into the median. The vehicle then struck a large tree.

Hezlep was trapped inside the vehicle and extricated before being taken by helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital. He died shortly thereafter, according to the release.

Michigan State Police, Life EMS, Hart fire and Pentwater fire and rescue assisted deputies at the scene.
