Motorcyclist sustains minor injuries in Monday crash

Big Rapids Department of Public Safety officers diverted Maple Street traffic down southbound Stewart Avenue on Monday after a motorcycle crash.

BIG RAPIDS — A motorcycle crash shut down a lane of traffic around 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Maple Street and Stewart Avenue.

Police said 51-year-old Joan Mollema, of White Cloud, was heading westbound on Maple Street on her motorcycle when a silver station wagon, travelling east on Maple Street, turned left in front of the motorcycle on to Stewart Avenue, causing a head-on crash.

Mollema came off the motorcycle and hit the car’s windshield with her helmet, Big Rapids Department of Public Safety Officer Erik Little said. She suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mecosta County Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

Little said Mollema’s injuries could have been much worse.

“That could be so bad, but this doesn’t appear to be,” Little said. “I think she’s going to be fine. She’s a little upset right now.”

Jessica Ann O’Brien, the 21-year-old Cadillac resident driving the station wagon, was cited for failing to yield before making a left turn and for having no proof of insurance.
