Kids Pedal Pull challenges children to show some muscle

BIG RAPIDS — Mecosta County children were pulling their weight, and then some, at Wednesday’s Kids Pedal Pull at the Mecosta County Fair.

Children lined up to try a miniature version of a tractor pull using small, pedal-powered tractor replicas. For each pedal pull, the tractor was loaded down with a set of weights attached to a lever system that lowers a steel plate as the child pedals. The plate begins to drag on the ground, forcing each child to exert more force to power the tractor forward.

Samuel Mullins, a 6-year-old Paris resident, took first place in his age group, completing a “full pull” with 175 pounds of weight attached to his tractor.

“I might need something to eat after that,” he said after his winning pull. “I burned off all my food.”
